The Art of Layered Lighting

There is a moment when you walk into a beautifully designed space and something just feels right. You may not immediately notice why, but the room feels warm, elevated, and intentional. More often than not, that feeling comes down to lighting.

Layered lighting is one of the most important and often overlooked elements of thoughtful design. It is the difference between a room that simply functions and a room that feels extraordinary.

At its core, layered lighting means using multiple types of light sources to create depth, softness, and interest. Instead of relying on a single overhead fixture, a well designed space incorporates several layers including ambient lighting, task lighting, and decorative lighting. When these elements work together, the result is a space that feels balanced and inviting at any time of day.

Wall sconces are one of my favorite tools for achieving this effect. They bring a softness to a room that overhead lighting simply cannot replicate. Placed beside a vanity mirror, they create flattering and even light. Installed over tile in a kitchen, they add a decorative moment that elevates an otherwise functional surface. These fixtures can also add warmth and interest along hallways, in bathrooms, or flanking built ins where a traditional ceiling light might feel harsh or flat.

Another favorite detail is the picture light, often referred to as library lighting. Traditionally used to illuminate artwork, picture lights are incredibly versatile. I often place them over a vanity mirror, above built in shelving, or above a refrigerator cabinet to create a warm glow and highlight architectural elements. These fixtures add a subtle sophistication and bring a tailored feel to spaces that might otherwise feel purely functional.

One design shift I have been especially enjoying lately is the move away from pendants over kitchen islands. While pendants certainly have their place, eliminating them can create a much cleaner and more architectural look. Without pendants interrupting the sightlines, the room feels calmer and more open. Decorative lighting can then be introduced elsewhere in the space in a more thoughtful way.

Flush mount fixtures are another opportunity that is often overlooked. Instead of defaulting to recessed cans in a hallway, a well chosen flush mount can add character while still providing practical light. The same idea applies inside a range alcove, where a decorative flush mount can create a beautiful focal point while softly illuminating the cooking area. These small moments of intentional lighting add personality and help transform everyday spaces into something special.

The key to making layered lighting feel intentional is cohesion. Decorative fixtures should relate to one another without feeling overly matched. The goal is harmony, where each piece contributes to the overall atmosphere of the room while still allowing the architecture and materials to shine.

It is also important that project budgets account for these decorative lighting elements from the beginning. Too often lighting budgets focus only on recessed cans and basic overhead fixtures, leaving little room for the pieces that truly bring a space to life. Allocating part of the budget to decorative sconces, picture lights, and specialty fixtures ensures the final design feels intentional and complete.
